My Enemy

My enemy the fragile one,

Is wearing his new mask today

He says it’s only temporary, a means to an end

Not intended for intimidation,

Not something to look at, either

He speaks in a hushed tone,

Wary of the hope that hangs in the air

Like an invisible sign you cannot ignore

My enemy the innocent one,

The one with a heart full of love

And a head full of dreams

Is breathing his last,

Wondering, I’m sure, about the cause of death
