Freedom

I searched for freedom in my head
In my home and in the classrooms,
In banquet halls and nightclubs,
And in the warm embrace of a lover
I thought I’d find freedom in music,
And in the words that flow, ever-hesitant,
From the black hole of my existence
Then I grew tired and weary
Wondering if freedom might hide
In the chains that keep me tied
To this free world
Years passed,
My hunger for freedom grew
As my life came to a standstill
Money went out of the window,
And soon, friends followed
And as I lay there in the ruins
I saw the elusive one
Out of the corner of my eye
